USFS plans to log
Endangered Species habitat
in Elk River watershed!

The Powers Ranger District claims their Coastal Healthy Forest Treatments project -- thinning 4,300 acres in Elk River watershed -- will enhance marbled murrelet habitat. They make the same claim about their proposed Milther Timber Sale.

To request a copy of the Milther Environmental Assessment or information about proposed actions under the Coastal Healthy Forest Treatments program, call District Ranger, Carl Linderman, 541-439-6217 or Interdisciplinary Team Leader, Steve Namitz, 541-439-6250.

The Port Orford/North Curry Chamber of Commerce voted to endorse the Copper Salmon Wilderness proposal. Our County Commissioners also supported the proposal, an unprecedented situation in conservative Curry County! We also thank Port Orford City Council and the Port Orford Watershed Council for their support.

We’re delighted that Oregon’s former Governor Kitzhaber asked Congress to pass legislation protecting the Copper Salmon Wilderness.

Elk River Watershed Analysis  produced by the U.S. Forest Service is now online. This 167-page document is the final version (1998).

Salamanders, Slugs and Snails
Our certified surveyors and skilled volunteers have now found 14 Del Norte salamanders and 6 Blue-gray tail dropper slugs, securing protection of critical zones within timber sales. They used FOER’s Wildlife Surveyor’s Guide to Terrestrial Mollusk and Amphibian Species of Concern.
