Highlights from our 25 years of Protection:
  • Federal designation of the 17,000 acre Grassy Knob Wilderness (1984)
  • FOER discovered 40 Marbled Murrelet nest sites, reducing or terminating USFS timber sales
  • American Rivers placed the Elk River on the 10 Most Endangered Rivers list (1995)
"I wish every river had friends like Elk River has friends."

David Bayles
Conservation Director
Pacific Rivers Council

Ongoing Projects

FOER’s "Citizen Science" projects enable people to make a difference in protecting their watershed:

  • Marbled murrelet surveys. FOER members survey timber sale areas, locating these threatened seabirds.
  • Rare terrestrial mollusk and amphibian surveys. FOER members take citizen volunteers to locate these at-risk species and protect their habitats.
  • Annual riparian tree planting. Volunteers plant trees and shrubs along the banks of Elk River.
  • Education scholarships. Scholarships and workshop fees for students strongly committed to environmental activism.
